Comparative Study of the Yevreyka Park in Rivne within the REHERIT 2.0 Project

Topic: Local Economic Development

Implementation period: May 2025 – August 2025

Client: European Union

Partners: Center for Urban History

Details: Rivne is one of the three communities participating in the project “REHERIT 2.0: Common Responsibility for Shared Heritage”. Together with our partners, we are working on the urban revitalization of the Yevreyka Park in Rivne, rethinking its place in the city’s environment, and integrating it into the social life of Rivne. Until the 1950s, the park area was the space of historical cemeteries: Jewish, Orthodox, and Catholic. Today, it is an open urban memorial space in need of rethinking and restoration.

To prepare for revitalization, the REHERIT 2.0 project team studied European experiences in developing modern cemeteries and public spaces that simultaneously serve civic, sacred, and memorial functions.

The analytical material presents 7 examples of revitalized spaces with a comparative analysis of aspects that could be adapted for Rivne:

  • Old Jewish Cemetery (Berlin, Germany)

  • The Third Train (Compiègne Forest, France)

  • Shelter for Life (Basel, Switzerland)

  • Luisenstädtischer Cemetery (Berlin, Germany)

  • Forest Path in the Cemetery (Roques Blanques Natural Park of Collserola, Barcelona, Spain)

  • Møllers Park – Old Cemetery (Esbjerg, Denmark)

  • Cemetery in Solbjerg Park (Frederiksberg, Denmark)

These practices demonstrate a sensitive approach to working with historical burial sites, taking into account the specifics of the terrain, the use of symbolism in landscape design, and the integration of a multicultural context.
